Yamaha MC-705
The Yamaha MC-705 stands out among mid range MC cartridges for its replaceable stylus. Its 0.3 mV output still requires a dedicated MC phono input or a step up transformer. The elliptical stylus tracks from 1.4 to 2.0 g with 1.7 g nominal. The replaceable stylus is the N-7050, and Phono Culture lists 2 compatible replacement styli.
The Yamaha MC-705 is a balanced, easygoing MC with an elliptical stylus that favors natural vocal reproduction and open, precise imaging over aggressive slam. Bass stays firm rather than boomy, dynamics feel lively without harshness, and forgiving tracking keeps older records enjoyable across vocal and acoustic genres. The stylus is replaceable, a rare MC convenience. It is often cited as an Audio-Technica OEM design for Yamaha, related to the AT3200.
