Pickering XSV/4000
The Pickering XSV/4000 belongs to the house XSV line with a Line Contact stylus. Its 0.7 mV output runs unusually low for MM, so the phono stage needs gain in reserve. The light 0.75 to 1.25 g tracking force with 1.0 g nominal is gentle on records. The replaceable stylus is the D4000, and Phono Culture lists 4 compatible replacement styli.
The Pickering XSV/4000 is refined and forgiving, with a natural, engaging character rather than clinical precision. Its Line Contact tip delivers solid detail retrieval and stable imaging without harshness, vocals come through with genuine warmth and body, and grounded bass supports lively but never overreaching dynamics. Jazz, vocal and classic rock collections on modest to mid systems suit it well. The D4000 stylus is replaceable, making ownership easy.
