Philips GP 316

The Philips GP 316 uses a ceramic piezo generator and was fitted to countless budget record players. Its huge 100 mV output expects the high impedance input of ceramic decks rather than an MM phono stage. The conical stylus tracks at a heavy 6 to 12 g. The replaceable stylus is the 946/S 33, and Phono Culture lists 2 compatible replacement styli.

Additional Info

The Philips GP 316 favors ease over resolution, with soft dynamics and a rounded, non-fatiguing midrange rather than sharp detail or precise imaging. Its spherical sapphire tip forgives scratches and casual tracking, suiting vintage mono setups spinning 78rpm and microgroove records instead of critical hi-fi listening. Known also as the AG3016 and 22GP316, it uses a replaceable stylus, so upkeep stays simple.
