The ELAC EMC 1 tops the German maker's cartridge range at the high end. Its tiny 0.12 mV output demands a high gain MC phono input or a step up transformer. The van den Hul stylus tracks from 1.5 to 1.75 g with 1.5 g nominal. The stylus is integrated, so a worn diamond means a retip.

The ELAC EMC 1 is precise and composed. Its boron cantilever and van den Hul profile deliver crisp micro-detail with tight image focus and controlled dynamics, while low noise keeps the backdrop clean. Bass stays firm rather than plush and vocals natural, though poor pressings get little mercy, so well-recorded classical, jazz and acoustic material on resolving systems suits it best. The stylus is integrated, so wear calls for a retip.
